Dhamra Port is being constructed on the eastern coast of India, to the north
of mouth of river Dhamra, in Bhadrak district of Orissa. The Dhamra Port
when commissioned will be one of the deepest ports in India, with a depth of
18 metres, capable of handling super capesize vessels up to 180000 DWT. This
port will have a cargo handling capacity of more than 100 million MT per
annum. However, during Phase-I the handling capacity will be 12 million MT
per annum for import of coal/limestone and 6.50 million MT per annum for
export of iron ore. DPCL is in the process of augmenting the export capacity
of iron ore by another 6.50 million MT per annum with the help of an
additional wagon tippler by December 2010. Being in close proximity to the
mineral heartland of India, viz. Orissa, Jharkhand and West Bengal, setting
up of this port is expected to result in substantial cost savings for
industries in steel, power and mining sector. Dhamra Port has a potential to
become a hub port for dry bulk, liquid bulk, break-bulk, containerized and
other general cargo.
The salient features of the port are summarized below:
